Shannon Murphy | HR Assistant
Joined TPCHR in August 2020
I grew up right in Middleton, Wisconsin and I attended UW-Madison (go Badgers!). I earned my BA in English with a certificate in leadership, but I soon decided to pursue another degree. I moved to North Carolina to earn my MA in English and Children’s Literature at UNC Charlotte. While there, I taught fairy tales at the collegiate level and wrote a thesis on a modern adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Though I have a passion for research and academia, I was not sure if moving directly into a doctoral program was the best fit for me. As a student, I never experienced a workforce career before; I have held many jobs in my life—a barista, cycling instructor, hospital administrative assistant, and doggy daycare employee to name a few—but none were structured for long-term career-building work. That is when I discovered TPCHR.
After graduation, I moved back to Middleton and joined TPCHR as a Human Resources Assistant. Though I was hired during the COVID-19 pandemic, it did not diminish the sense of community I felt from my coworkers. I learned quickly that HR—and specifically TPCHR—is full of wonderful people who strive to help others and want to overcome any obstacles that their clients may face. As a former educator, a role in HR is the perfect fit for me: you must care for others, have a passion for teaching, and know how to edit your plans on the fly.
When I am not working, I enjoy spending lots of quality time with my dog, Maya, going for runs, and reading all the books I can get my hands on. I am also a big fan of trivia and try to play as much as I can. One day I hope to be a contestant on Jeopardy!
